KUALA LUMPUR: The financing guarantee under Syarikat Jaminan Pembiayaan Perniagaan (SJPP) will help micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) strengthen their capital base and sustain export momentum.
Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said working capital remains the most critical requirement for export-oriented companies.
"This RM5 billion guarantee is expected to provide sufficient support for MSMEs and help sustain momentum.
"Last month, SJPP announced RM100 million, and this larger guarantee will further strengthen continuity in financing," he said at Matrade's first quarter trade update here today.
Reezal said in the current environment, spending needs to continue as halting it could lead to economic contraction.
"However, it is important to reduce leakages and ensure resources are used more efficiently," he added.
Reezal's comments came after announcements by the Finance Ministry yesterday and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on measures to support MSMEs affected by the global energy crisis.
The government has allocated RM10 billion in total support for MSMEs.
The prime minister said he had requested additional funding from Bank Negara Malaysia, with further details on the allocation to be announced by the central bank governor soon.
